Here’s a Good Things Monday recommendation. Go see Polisse at IFC. It’s a provocative, emotionally charged examination of the French Police Child Protection Unit. The director’s choice in actors (working class, multi-ethnic, believable) heightened the realism - here we would’ve had to cast Colin Firth and Charlize Theron. Like The Wire, the effect work has on the officers, their need for humor/humiliation, and their camaraderie was riveting. So French, so good.

Meanwhile, I got to spend all of a sunny Brooklyn sat w/ this wonderful man - illustrator and creator of the best bag (Chester Wallace!) in the galaxies - Patrick Longgggggg.

Tonight’s my sister’s birthday and we watched this after a great day, thanks to IFC. I’d describe it ineloquently as a naturalistic supernatural hit men drama. BW is a serious talent. Without the hoopla of $$ special effects or gratuitous gun battles, he tightens the wire of tension (domestic and homicidal). My recommendation is watch this with close captioning on. That way you won’t miss all the subtle and smartly written English mate dialog. My sis was worried about my black imagination when I called the dark and twisted ending. An indie film state of mind, I guess.

It’s been a while. New job = no time to post. But this Fritz Lang film came up in work-related conversation. I was trying to remember the title, and E. googled the babbling synopsis I spit out…ta da, instant film title recollection!

Great poster, great film.

“A power struggle ensues after the death of media magnate Amos Kyne, whose corporation has been turned over to his sole heir, his foppish son Walter. Rather than run the company himself, Walter decides to let the heads of its three divisions fight it out for control.

Their assignment is to score an exclusive on a serial killer who is terrorizing women in New York. The Kyne organization’s newspaper dubs him “The Lipstick Killer.” If a resourceful someone can identify him even before the police do, Walter Kyne will reward him with the title of executive director.” (wiki synopsis).
